The Harlem Globetrotters are an exhibition basketball team that has travelled throughout North America spreading positive messages in schools (earning the nickname the 'Ambassadors of Goodwill').
AVP Globetrotter was created in the same tradition. A giant handmade card with many pages for signing, it is being mailed around the globe to spread good will, communication and unity among AVPers.
The idea was hatched at Green Haven Correctional Facility (the birthplace of AVP) by the inside facilitators, who were inspired by the AVP directory created by Maji Peterx in Nigeria. As they realized how far AVP has spread around the globe, they wanted to find a way to connect programs around the world in a creative and concrete way and so designed a large format card (12" x 18") that was painted by one of the AVP artists.
The outside coordinator then used the AVP directory as well as the emails of International Gathering attendees to contact a program on each continent which would be able to receive the card, have it signed by local AVPers and then mail it on to the next stop.
So far Globetrotter has gone from New York to Costa Rica in Central America, to Nigeria in Africa, and London, England in Europe. From there it made its way to Western Australia and New Zealand. It finally reached Nepal, where it had been long awaited. Now, in the home stretch, it has landed in Canada. Globetrotter will be at a meeting of four area councils and go into a prison workshop. Then it will finally come back to New York. So far it's been on the road for about 11 months and has truly circled the globe.
The original idea was for the card to make its way back to New York in time for the AVP-USA Conference to be held in New York at the end of May. That goal is long past. We're just happy that Globetrotter is spreading good will, connection and AVP spirit as it makes its journey from continent to continent.
